Parque El Poblado is a small plaza located in the heart of the El Poblado neighborhood in Medellín. More than a place of tourist interest in itself, it is a place of reference, close to food, lodging and entertainment options, with lower prices than in El Lleras or Provenza.

Unlike the concept of a park that is known in other countries, it is not a long expanse of forests, lakes and meadows. Like many parks in Medellín and Colombia, it is a concrete block, surrounded by four streets, a church and some benches to rest or wait while you meet someone.

As a tourist attraction, the Park does not have much to offer. Do not expect to find a lot of history, or perfect corners to take a great photo. What is interesting is what you find in the surrounding streets, and that is what I am going to talk about in this post.

Location

Parque El Poblado is located between two of the most important streets in the sector. On the one hand, Calle 10, which connects the “Poblado” subway station with El Poblado, Lleras and Provenza Park. And on the other hand, Avenida El Poblado, which is the road that crosses the neighborhood from north to south, connecting with sectors such as the Golden Mile and the Santa Fe Shopping Center.

This location makes the Parque El Poblado sector a strategic and quite convenient site, especially if you are a tourist and want to visit both El Poblado and other places in Medellín.

If you stay by Parque El Poblado, you will be able to walk in a few minutes to the Metro station, Parque Lleras, Provenza and many other sectors of interest in the neighborhood.

How to get there?

The best way to get to Parque El Poblado is by Metro. You must take line A and get off at the “Poblado” station. From there you just have to go up Calle 10, taking a 15-minute walk or taking one of the buses or taxis that are at the station exit.

Please note that Calle 10 is a sloping street. If you or any of your companions have difficulty walking or are not in very good physical condition, this walk can be exhausting, especially on sunny days.

Things to do

As I told you before, the best of Parque El Poblado is in its surroundings. Especially if you are looking for a nice place to have lunch or coffee in the afternoon.

Unlike sectors such as Lleras or Provenza, which only begin to come to life after 4 in the afternoon, in the surroundings of Parque El Poblado you will find several restaurants open from noon.

Here I tell you some of the places and activities that I like the most in the sector.

Best restaurants

La Matriarca

An old house in Medellín converted into a cult of typical Paisa food. This restaurant is a must, not only for its careful decoration, but also for its hearty dishes with a delicious local flavor.

My recommendation is that you order any of the pork-based preparations, which are the specialty of the house.

La Tienda del vino

This is a classic restaurant in the sector, specializing in cuts of meat and, as its name suggests, with a very good wine list. An ideal place to go as a couple or as a family. What I like most about La Tienda de Vino is the homey experience. Even in one of the menu options they bring you the raw cuts of meat with a small portable stove so that you can prepare it at your table..

Restaurants incarrera 43b

For those who want to take care of their pocket, eat something delicious and practical, in the 43B race that is next to the park there are many options. This is a pedestrian street with all kinds of options: Antioquian food, seafood and fast food. In almost all the restaurants on the street you can find dishes between $20,000 and $25,000 pesos ($5 dollars).

El Zorro y la gitana

Good pizzas, instead of dividing, unite. And this is what the Fox and the Gypsy do. Across Calle 10, two blocks from the Park, you’ll find a diverse pizza menu that offers options for carnivores and vegetarians. My recommendation is that you order the Pizza Hera, a vegetarian option with ricotta cheese, basil and blackberry preserve.

Other activities

Go to Acción Impro Theater

Want to train your spanish? This theater is located a few blocks from Parque del Poblado and has a stage for 110 people. The price of the shows varies, you can find some with free admission and those with ticket office usually have a cost starting at $30,000 COP ($6 dollars).

This kind of works are perfect if you like to be more than a passive spectator, since often in improvisation the public participates and even becomes the focus of the show.

Working remotely? Go to WeWork

If you consider yourself a digital nomad, you may be looking for a place with good internet, comfortable chairs, good views and a good atmosphere. Two blocks from the Park you will find a WeWork headquarters, with the best coworking standard in the world. I’ve been there a few times and it’s quite worth it.

Take pictures to the wynwood-like walls

Finally, near the park you will find several murals to take some very good photos. My favorite is right in front of La Matriarca restaurant, it’s a giant mural that you can take at least 5 photos with different artworks.

Best hotels

To close this list I want to give you two accommodation recommendations near El Poblado Park. But if you prefer, here’s a whole ranking with our favourite hotels in El Poblado

The first one is the Hotel Masaya, which has shared and private rooms. A place with a lot of cultural diversity, a very modern decoration, a very nice cafe and the best rooftop in the city (in my opinion).

If you want calm stay and want to be close to everything, I recommend Hotel 574, which is in one of the quietest streets of El Poblado. A place surrounded by nature, with very modern rooms and best of all: very careful service.
